IT vendors are not providing the innovative purchasing models that UK’s cash-strapped businesses are thirsty for, according to research published by IT services firm Getronics. Nearly two thirds of UK businesses stated their increased willingness to adopt innovative approaches to financing whilst only a half felt that vendors were providing them.
With 95 per cent of companies admitting to increased pressure to reduce capital expenditure, Getronics has questioned why the IT industry isn’t moving faster to offer more flexibility and innovation with its pricing during difficult times.
The study, published today, assessed the views of 200 IT managers and business decision makers from across UK businesses. Predominantly focusing on the economic pressures facing the IT department, the research highlighted considerable willingness to adopt shared risk and reward models within contracts, with the hope that they will produce a more rapid return on investment.
“Developing an innovative commercial model to sell IT may not seem like the obvious move for a sector trying to maintain its market share. However, if customers want it we’d be utterly foolish not to capitalise upon it,” commented Dave Baldwin, MD at Getronics UK and Ireland. “Some of our customers are already moving to these models and it should be considered as nothing more than a true example of IT providers responding to a businesses need.”
The study also highlighted varied attitudes towards new technology delivery models especially the well-published rivalry between utility and Cloud computing. Only 18 per cent of business decision makers admitted to knowing exactly what ‘The Cloud’ is, while nearly a tenth of IT managers expect all IT services to be delivered through either Cloud or Utility models. Utility computing has proven to be the current favourite with a fifth of firms using it today, while the figure is half that for Cloud computing models.
